This rich reddish-brown tea is…. I honestly don’t know what it is!! It has a distinctive flavor and once you’ve tried it, you will not forget it! It has a natural sweetness, but there is something more. Maybe it’s Africa! This is the tea I imagine Uncle Remus drinking while sitting on his front porch, telling stories to the children. I’ve never been to Africa, but to me, this tea tastes like I imagine it: Earthy. Mysterious. Sensuous. Beautiful.
Rooibos technically is not a ‘tea’. It comes from a totally different plant that grows in South Africa. It became popular when the Dutch settled there and green and black teas were too expensive to import. Rooibos is a smooth tea. Because it has fewer tannins, it will not get bitter like green and black teas will when steeped too long. You can steep this tea for a minute or two, or up to an hour. Find what you like. Some prepare it with milk and sweetener. Some make a red espresso. Just make it super strong and you’ve got it. Try four tea bags per cup of just-below-boiling water. Let steep for 2-3 minutes. Remove tea bags and enjoy! If you are trying to limit caffeine but love your strong drinks, maybe this would help! Rooibos tea has numerous health benefits, the most outstanding one being that it has a lot of antioxidants.
