I grew up with fresh ground flour and home made bread, and I thought I knew a thing or two. I thought I didn’t need this cookbook when I bought it about three months ago. Was I ever wrong! I have, on hand, spelt and a sort of medium-quality hard red wheat to grind. While I would love to try einkorn and all the rest, using what I have has yielded good results.

My thirteen year old son liked the layout, with one recipe and a photo on each page. “I will make every cookie recipe,” he said. He began at the beginning, and made a batch each day after school until I begged him to stop. Too much of a good thing! “The problem with our family,” he said, “is we eat too fast. One day, and a whole batch of cookies is gone.”

The only recipe I won’t be using again is the bun recipe that calls for vinegar. I wouldn’t say it was awful, some people would probably like it, but my eight year old is still sniffing the buns before she packs her school lunch. “Any vinegar in these, Mom?”

I think a book with only one recipe to avoid is a very reliable book. This is my new go-to place for whole grain recipes. Also, the construction of the book is sturdy and beautiful. It feels good in my hands and I think it will endure coffee stains and butter smudges just fine.
